Hi! My name is Emily Golightly. I am a native of Carteret County, and I am now raising my own family here. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Jim, for nineteen years. Our daughter, Maggie, is seventeen and is in the twelfth grade this year. Our son, Jude, is fourteen and is in the ninth grade this year. I have many hobbies, including reading (of course!), knitting and crocheting, kayaking, listening to music, shopping, seeing movies, traveling, baking, painting, and spending time with friends and family.
I received my bachelor's degree from East Carolina University in Elementary Education, and I also have my reading certification in grades K-12 and my TESL certification in grades K-12. I am proud to say I was a NC Teaching Fellow and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the ECU Honors Program. I completed my master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language through UNCW, and obtained a second master's degree in Media and Library Sciences (MLS) through Appalachian State University. This is my nineteenth year teaching, and I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grades, reading and math intervention, and English to speakers of other languages (ESL), before becoming the media coordinator for NES. I enjoy seeing the progression of skills, both academically and socially, in all of these areas. I served as an educational consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction's English Learner Support Team, as well as a member of their textbook adoption committee, and I was also a founding member of the North Carolina English Learners Teacher Leader Network, an organization designed to provide resources and support for teachers of English learners throughout North Carolina. I have worked with other ESL teachers throughout North Carolina to develop a collaborative space in which we can help English Learners grow and be nurtured. I regularly offer professional development at the local, state, and national level in a variety of subjects related to literacy and language learning. I am the Director of Programming for the Crystal Coast Reading Council (our county's local chapter of the International Literacy Association), as well as the current President of the North Carolina Reading Association, not to mention a member of the International Literacy Association, the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the NC School Library and Media Association (NCSLMA)--where I serve as the committee chair for the Conference Authors and Speakers Committee, ISTE, NCTiES, Carolina TESOL, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher service organization. In my spare time, I have created a podcast called "Sorry, I'm All Booked" to discuss books and current issues facing librarians and others in the education field. I also play the flute in our community's Sunshine Band and serve as the secretary of the West Carteret High School Band Boosters Association. Children are my life, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to impact your child's life! |
