Hi! My name is Emily Golightly. I am a native of Carteret County, and I am now raising my own family here. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Jim, for seventeen years. Our daughter, Maggie, is fifteen and is in the tenth grade this year. Our son, Jude, is twelve and is in the seventh grade this year. I have many hobbies, including reading (of course!), knitting and crocheting, kayaking, listening to music, shopping, seeing movies, traveling, baking, painting, and spending time with friends and family.
I received my bachelor's degree from East Carolina University in Elementary Education, and I also have my reading certification in grades K-12 and my TESL certification in grades K-12. I am proud to say I was a NC Teaching Fellow and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the ECU Honors Program. I completed my master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language through UNCW, and I am now pursuing a second master's degree in Media and Library Sciences (MLS) through Appalachian State University. This is my eighteenth year teaching, and I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grades, reading and math intervention, and English to speakers of other languages (ESL), before becoming the media coordinator for NES. I enjoy seeing the progression of skills, both academically and socially, in all of these areas. I am an educational consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction's English Learner Support Team, and I was also a founding member of the North Carolina English Learners Teacher Leader Network, an organization designed to provide resources and support for teachers of English learners throughout North Carolina. I have worked with other ESL teachers throughout North Carolina to develop a collaborative space in which we can help English Learners grow and be nurtured. I am also serving on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's English Learner Advisory Council (2020-2022). I am the Past President of the Crystal Coast Reading Council (our county's local chapter of the International Literacy Association), as well as the current Vice President for the North Carolina Reading Association, not to mention a member of the International Literacy Association, the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the NC School Library and Media Association (NCSLMA), Carolina TESOL, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teacher service organization. I am also part of an international teacher exchange program, partnering with teachers in Germany to examine comparative education programs. Children are my life, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to impact your child's life! |
